If you have oily skin, chances are the idea of putting hydrating products on would make you squirm! But alas NOT hydrating or stripping the oil will only make your skin compensate by stepping up its oil production.
Our skin is such a clever and complicated organ so make sure you understand how it works before committing to a new regime to tackle the dreaded oil.
There are several things that can cause an over-production of oil such as Stress, hormone fluctuations and it can even be hereditary (yeah thanks mum and dad!)
Lets take stress for example;
Stress raises Progesterone and Cortisol levels which in turn increases production of oil secretions and reduces Hyaluronic Acid, our naturally made water loving hydration factor.
Dehydration causes your skin to compensate with more oil thus the cycle continues.
Another mistake people with oily skin can make is thinking they need to strip their skin of oil but what happens when they do? They remove the all important acid mantle from the surface of their skin which then allows for trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) and leaves the skin open to irritants and subsequently leads to further dehydration. Cue the cycle all over again….
So always remember…. DEHYDRATION=INCREASED OIL PRODUCTION
Products and treatments which draw out oil without stripping and protecting the acid mantle is imperative to break the cycle.
